Trait Semantics and live Texas Hold’em poker

The linguistic characteristics of Texas Hold’em poker make it possible to use the same principles to process and quantify the information that are progressively revealed along the spot and, in relation to it, to attribute an of the potential skills involved.

What is the Trait Semantics?

Trait Semantics originates in Leibniz’s component analysis, which allows the meaning to be broken down into its elementary components. It was successfully applied by the Russian linguist Trubeckoj [Gobber, 2012] in the “decomposition of linguistic vocal sounds” and subsequently perfected with the model of the “Necessary and sufficient conditions (CNS)” of the Danish linguist Hjelmslev.

Like the linear mathematical model presented earlier, trait semantics and CNS also have some limitations in explaining the complex field of communication. However, they are a model that is perfectly applicable to the linguistic system and communication dynamics of live Texas Hold’em poker. The preliminary conditions for the applicability of this model, in fact, provide for the satisfaction of two necessary conditions: «the meaning can be broken down into semantic features due to its formation and the number of semantic features constitutes a limited inventory» [Anolli, 2012].

Applicability of the Trait Semantics to the live Texas Hold’em poker.

The linguistic code of Texas Hold’em poker perfectly satisfies the two prerogatives. In fact, it develops with the random combination of 1326 possible combinations, no matter the order of arrangement of the combinations. Furthermore, with respect to the CNS model, each combination has a unique, absolute meaning determined precisely by its constituent components [Anolli, 2012]. A pair of aces, for example, means only and exclusively a pair of aces, without any possibility of ambiguity. The purpose of these tools is to decompose the components of a word or, more generally, of a code into elementary units of meaning, which cannot be further broken down, which, when combined, can generate new words, or new codes with new meanings, depending on the grammar that governs it.
